At Buena Vista, we care deeply about our impact on the planet and the communities we operate within. We're on a journey to operate in as regenerative a manner as possible. While we know we're not perfect, we are committed to continually improving.
Our Ongoing Commitment
We’re dedicated to exploring feasible options for renewable energy generation and supply to power our hotel in the most sustainable way possible. Additionally, we’re actively looking for ways to deepen our engagement and support within the local community, ensuring that our presence contributes positively to the lives of those around us.
Social Initiatives
Our team is predominantly made up of local Nicaraguans, with our 3% tip fee going solely to our local staff members.
Our core team is predominantly female, with 67% (4 out of 6 members) being women, actively working to overcome gender rights imbalances in our community.
When storms and onshore winds bring plastic waste to our beautiful Maderas beach, we gather willing guests, local community members, and other beachgoers to clean the shore and prevent the waste from polluting our ocean.
We aim to provide a space of well-being, freedom, and relaxation for our guests, allowing you to unplug and tune into the natural cycles around you.
Environmental Efforts
We use our own well and water storage system to reduce pressure on the already strained local water supply.
Our waste grey water is used to irrigate our lush gardens, which provide shelter and food for howler monkeys and birds, including our resident Guardabarranco, the national bird of Nicaragua.
We compost all our organic kitchen waste.
We recycle aluminum cans and plastic bottles. Although recycling in Nicaragua is still developing, every effort helps.
Last year, when extreme heat and dryness caused monkeys to fall from trees due to dehydration, we placed water butts around the property to offer them hydration.
We have a small kitchen garden where we grow fruits and vegetables to supplement our kitchen. We're also working on forming a partnership with a local farm to establish a farm-to-fork system—more on this as it develops.
Although we currently don't produce our own renewable power, we have explored solar options. However, given our location on a hill surrounded by a tree canopy with a palm roof, it's not yet feasible. We’ll keep exploring this, as we recognize it’s an important area for improvement.
We don’t have A/C on the premises due to the high electricity usage it requires.
Our eco-lodge and cabanas are built from hand-cut local Nicaraguan wood and have been carefully situated to minimize environmental impact.
We provide filtered water and encourage guests to avoid using single-use plastic bottles whenever possible. If you have a reusable bottle, please bring it.
