It all started when we first met in 2003. After our first holiday together we joked about owning our own place somewhere far away, in a country with perfect weather and good waves. Although we had just met and hardly knew each other, the joke became more and more serious.
After searching the internet and visiting several possible destinations like the Dominican Republic, Barbados and Carriacou, we still had not found the right spot. We both decided to quit our jobs and just leave Holland, where Mariëlle was a sportswear buyer for Intersport in Europe and Marc was responsible for European Sales & Marketing for the surf brand, O’Neill. We planned to learn Spanish for a month, then travel from Central to South America in search of the perfect location.
August 6th, 2004 we started our journey in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. We took Spanish lessons, surfed the surrounding beaches, looked around and fell in love with the country. We surfed a lot at Playa Maderas and finally went to check out the area with a local realtor.
The first time we visited the land where Buena Vista Surf Club now stands we could hardly see the ocean, as it was totally overgrown. However, we set our mind to it and decided that this was the spot for us. So we put together all the money we had and purchased it in September 2004.
During construction we were there everyday to help out and to adjust plans where needed. Designs and building plans we made ourselves and with just a local crew and some tool, but no heavy machinery we create this place trying to keep the environmental impact as low as possible. It took a lot longer than estimated, but finally after a year we could welcome our first guests.
2015 was the 10th anniversary of the Buena Vista Surf Club. Starting off with just 2 cabañas in december 2005 and just the 2 of us running the lodge, today a small team of great people is working at the lodge that now has 6 cabañas. The intimate set up enables us to provide personalised care and a really social environment. We hope you’ll enjoy it!
